Dr. Nelson U. Okorie is a driven academic and committed community leader. His path from modest origins to a distinguished lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension at Akwa Ibom State University is evidence of his commitment to research, education, and community involvement.
Academic and Teaching Career
Academic career of Dr. Okorie is distinguished by major contributions to research and teaching. He started as a Lecturer I in the University of Abuja’s Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, Faculty of Agriculture. His teaching style and the several courses he presented at both undergraduate and graduate levels clearly showed his dedication to education.
Among the courses he has tutored are Administration and Planning in Extension, Theory of Social and Technological Change in Agriculture, Rural and Community Development, Introduction to Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, and Extension Education. Reflecting his thorough knowledge in agricultural education and rural development, his teaching repertory runs from basic courses to advanced seminars and dissertation supervision.

Research interests of Dr. Okorie include in rural development, agricultural extension, and socioeconomic issues of agriculture. He has written significantly for local as well as foreign publications.

Professional Affiliations and Community Service
Among the various professional associations Dr. Okorie actively supports are the Farm Management Association of Nigeria (FAMAN), Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria (AESON), Agricultural Society of Nigeria (ASN), and Nigerian Rural Sociological Association (NRSA). These associations show his determination to improve Nigerian policies and agricultural methods.
Apart from his studies, Dr. Okorie is quite committed in community involvement. He is pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (City of Favour parish) and President General of Ikono Progressive Minds, a sociopolitical group.
Along with serving as an INEC Adhoc Collation officer during the 2023 General Elections, his leadership tasks include organizing political and governance directorates.
Among his community service activities are those of Chairman of the Scholarship Award Committee in his local government region, Academic Adviser for Agricultural Economics and Extension, and External Examiner for the Department of Agricultural Education at the College of Education Afaha Nsit.
Awards and Honors
Many honors have gone to Dr. Okorie for his contributions to community service and academia. The Agricultural Students Association at the College of Education Afaha Nsit and the National Association of Ikono Students worldwide bestowed upon him the Excellence Award. Scholarship grants from the Akwa Ibom State Government for his M.Sc. and the EIF for his Ph.D. program helped him further his studies.
In 2014 he was also given the Jerusalem Pilgrim (JP) designation and the Excellence Award from the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers (Ibaku Ntok Okpo Group of Villages)
Personal Philosophy and Future Aspirations
Dr. Okorie is Passionate about humanitarian work and community leadership, he also teaches actively and conducts research. His personal philosophy is based on the conviction that education is the social and moral conscience of society and that the post-secondary system must be relentlessly promoted to help to fulfill this objective.
With an eye on the future, Dr. Okorie wants to keep working in rural development and agricultural education, thereby helping to significantly influence academics as well as his hometown.
